Words for All Children – The Boy with the Blue Shoes

Words for All Children (WAC) – The Boy with the Blue Shoes –  has been compiled as an off-the-shelf resource. It is designed to be offered by therapists to parents/carers and all those in a child’s environment  – to use as a basis for social engagement and verbal interaction. The aim is to increase the child’s knowledge of words and how they work in real life.

Words for All Children (WAC) has been written by Florence King, the author of the popular Functional Language Across Countries (FLAC) Bilingual Assessment series. ‘The Boy with the Blue Shoes’ follows the theoretical base used for the lexical content of FLAC – which was influenced by research (particularly the research that informs us of the word concepts that are common across all languages). The activities included are therefore for parents of children all across the world who are learning to communicate.

This resource has been developed for the support of language development in children. The suitability of the resource will depend on the child’s readiness or aptitude for the activities. We suggest that many children will be able to engage in the activities from the age of 2 1/2+.

WAC likewise may also be of value to practitioners supporting adults who present with communication impairments.

There are no rules about which parts of the WAC resource are to be used or not used, who leads the storytelling or in which order the various parts are introduced.

This is a large and fun resource to help expand vocabulary and encourage verbal interaction. It follows the boy with the blue shoes and his friends (the giraffe with the wonky neck, the girl with different boots, the mum with the floppy hat, the baby with one tooth, the grandma with broken glasses, the man wearing a long coat, the rabbit with a really fluffy tail, the elephant with the enormous ears and the cat with the tremendous whiskers). The activities are all based on their adventures.

16. The boy with the blue shoes plays I-Spy
