‘Semantics’ refers to the meaning of words and phrases, and how a range of levels of meaning can be attached to a single word.  Making these semantic links is an important part of vocabulary development.

This semantic links resource includes coloured photographic images of objects which can each be paired semantically – for example “hand/glove” or “knife/fork”. Advice is included to help when children are having problems selecting the correct association or explaining why pictures go together.  Ideas are also included to vary the difficulty of each task. The pack contains an additional 30 pictures pairs of black and white line drawings.

Activites include:

  • which ones go together
  • odd one out – can you spot which is the odd one out from a set of pictures?
  • add to it – can you add a word association from your mind to the pair that you have have found?
  • word chains  – can you explain a connection between the pictures?
