The acquisition of verbs in a child’s language system is important in the child’s semantic and syntactic development. Verbs can be seen as providing a ‘frame’ for structuring sentences and as being responsible for much of the grammatical structure of language.
One of our most popular packs, Verbs, use and understanding, is designed to develop children’s understanding and use of verbs. Attractive and colourful illustrations depict early 21 different verbs, and full instructions are included for lots of games and activities.
Suitable for use with children in a wide age range from 3 years plus.
For more information see below.
Our popular Verbs Pack is designed to support early language development through vibrant, engaging picture materials illustrating early action words. The picture materials for games and activities can be used to supplement through play ‘real-life’ opportunities to develop the use of doing words.
Each of the 21 verbs covered in this pack is illustrated six times. Sometimes an action is illustrated with a variety of people and animals carrying out that action, for example, ‘boy running’, ‘bear running’, and ‘cat running’. Sometimes an action is illustrated with a person or animal carrying out that action in a variety of locations, for example, the man sleeping in a chair, and the dog sleeping on a cushion. Not only does this provide the opportunity for high levels of repetition and thus reinforcement, but it means that the resources can be used to develop longer utterances of several words, where the verb is set in a context. It will also complement the narrative approach to language learning, focusing on ‘who’ and ‘where’ elements.
The pack contains full instructions for a range of different suggested activities, targeting both expressive language and receptive language. These include: Find the picture (both single and multiple verbs Barrier games Who and Where activities Verbs ‘hide and seek’ Pairs game The reward game
