This Speech Bubbles resource aims to help improve question formation; help children understand idioms; discuss emotions; develop verbal reasoning skills and identify homophones. The Speech Bubbles pack consists of six pictures of familiar situations – the beach, the park, the playground, the classroom, the pet shop and the fast food restaurant – with four different scenarios on each picture. Full instructions are included for each of the related activities to be carried out with the picture.

Question formation

Many children have difficulty with question formation. This highly structured activity can be presented as a verbal/ written exercise or add role play to add extra meaning.

Understand Idioms

This section presents a wide variety of commonly used idioms and provides you with the opportunity to discuss the literal interpretation and the real meaning. For further work on this area, see ‘Idioms: People say the Funniest Things’

Discuss emotions

Children with limited language skills and those with pragmatic difficulties often have difficulty recognising and understanding other people’s emotions.

This pack provides the opportunity to discuss a wide range of emotions, from simple ones (‘It’s Usha’s birthday. How does she feel?’) to more complex feelings (Mrs Jones knows that she has to go to work but would rather stay in the park. How does she feel?)

Develop verbal reasoning skills

This area provides extensive questions that develop inferencing skills and deduction. There are also opportunities for the child to talk about their own experiences. For further work on this area see our other resources: Mr Goodguess and Explain, Predict, Imagine.

Identify homophones

Written exercises draw attention to the fact that some words sound the same as one another but they are written differently and they have different meanings. Full instructions are provided on the sheets that accompany the pictures.

Each person depicted in the pictures is shown with a speech bubble, which can be used for visual and written cues. You may wish to work through all of the targets for a particular picture, or you may wish to choose one particular target, for example, feelings, and then work through that section of each picture. It’s up to you! Instructions are provided for activities that address each area.
