A complete programme of structured group sessions and related activities which aim to develop the sound awareness skills of children who require additional support to with phonics acquisition.
Developed by Sarah Parkin, Speech and Language Therapist, in collaboration with Helen Rippon, this illustrated programme of activities was designed to support the development of phonological skills in children who have been identified as having delayed attention and listening skills, speech sound errors and/or as not developing phonological awareness skills at the expected rate.
The programme covers Early Years Foundation Stage and is designed to be implemented within a small group setting. It is aimed at Reception aged children (aged four to five years).

Our popular Time for Sounds (sound awareness) programme was extensively trialled over two years and has produced excellent outcomes in children’s literacy skills. Click here to download a report on the trial.
The sessions are intended for use with groups of six children and are presented in 30– 45 minute sessions with frequent changes of activity embedded within each session. The activities and group sizes may be adapted – for example, the activities may be used with one child on an individual basis, or with the whole class. Focus areas include:
The sound awareness programme mirrors the development of phonological awareness skills in children, developing phonological awareness skills by explicitly raising awareness of the sound properties of words, beginning with larger units of sound, and moving to the smaller component sounds of words.
When individual elements of listening are identified, demonstrated, rehearsed and supported by visual cues, it is much more likely that children will achieve success in this area. The elements of good listening identified and illustrated in this pack are : (Good looking; Good sitting; Hand up to speak; Good taking turns.
Each session plan within the pack includes a visual schedule of the activities the children will be carrying out.
The pack includes explicit instructions suitable for SLT’s, teachers and teaching assistants, coloured illustrations and black and white alternatives.
