To be an effective learners, young people need to develop self-worth and confidence in their abilities, take responsibility for their own learning and performance, demonstrate persistence and resilience in the face of setbacks and manage feelings of anger and frustration. Emotional literacy can be thought of as a set of skills that help learners be successful in school, in work and in relationships.
Talking About Social and Emotional Skills (part of our popular Talking About series) aims to support young people in the development of their social and emotional skills and is aimed at children between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

Supported by our trademark illustrations produced by Helen Rippon, this pack focuses on social and emotional skills and provides scenarios in which a young person’s emotional literacy may be challenged. Aimed at young people 11–13 years of age and above, it provides the opportunity to discuss a range of situations that lead to positive and negative emotions and the personal qualities that may be of help in these situations.
This social and emotional skills resource pack follows the format of an introductory picture, illustrating a particular scenario, followed by four possible responses to the situation, depicting potential courses of action – some appropriate and some inappropriate. The pack also provides discussion questions, should the group or individual pupil need some prompting. In addition, each section includes extension activities which offer further opportunities to discuss ways of dealing with difficult feelings and the personal qualities that may be required to resolve them.
The pack can be used in a one-to-one setting but works most successfully if it can be delivered within a group of between four and six students to facilitate an exchange of opinions and encourage discussion.
The emotions and qualities depicted begin, deliberately simply, with ‘happiness’ to enable learners to become familiar with the format, but then move on to more complex emotions including:
Suitable for teachers, teaching assistants and speech and language therapists. The large picture is presented to the pupil or the group. The adult reads out the explanation of what is happening and may lead the discussion. The four accompanying smaller pictures are then displayed, one at a time, to encourage the group to explore and discuss possible responses to the emotions being experienced by the young person in the selected situation. Following a discussion of the illustrated responses and other potential options, the group are then encouraged to explore strategies for such a situation.
