Talking About friends: Situational Understanding (Team Licence)

Description

Talking About Friends : situational understanding is a resource designed for children 5-7years+ (Foundation Stage 2 and Key Stage 1), depicting a range of challenging social and educational scenarios that children in this age group may encounter. The pack looks in particular at situations that may arise around friendship. Successful management of these situations is dependent on the young person’s social skills, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal problem-solving capacity, as well as the response of others and the context of the event. This pack aims to teach children specific strategies to manage these situations.

The pack is full of activities and charming illustrations designed to manage emotional responses and resulting behaviour in situations focussing on relationships with friends.

Black Sheep Press “Talking About” is a series that focuses on developing situational understanding and verbal reasoning skills in children. Each pack focuses on a specific aspect of the child’s life and how these skills may be put into practice in this setting. The idea originated from Educational Psychologist Marion Nash and has been developed by Helen Rippon, SLT.

It is inevitable that some children will require a more focused approach in order to learn how to manage their emotional responses and resulting behaviour, and many schools now offer small-group interventions in order to address this problem. The materials are ideal for small-group work, although they can be easily adapted to one-to-one settings, and they are suitable for pupils who have semantic-pragmatic difficulties or an autistic spectrum disorder.

The pack is full of charming illustrations by Helen Rippon. Children will discuss one of these engaging illustrations, which shows a situation that is relevant to their experiences at school, such as a child who has no one to play with.  For each scenario, four pictures will then be shown to the group, depicting different responses to the scenario, some appropriate and some inappropriate, got help find a solution. Scenarios include:

  • Aziz has been teasing Shannon about her old teddy bear
  • Best friends disagree about games to play
  • Jessica and Nasim were playing football when Jessica kicked the football very hard and broke a window
  • Jared and Michael were playing in the park when two big boys take away their football
  • Kirsty accidentally breaks Jameela’s doll
  • Gemma is handing out invitations to her birthday party and doesn’t give an invitation to Leanne

The Talking About Friends situational understanding pack includes clear instructions for discussion as well as prompts for extension activities (for example, the importance of saying sorry, how to accept an apology, and the good and bad things about accepting an apology). The materials are suitable for use by speech and language therapists, teachers and teaching assistants and parents.
