Language Through Listening, Pre-linguistic Skills (Team Licence)

Description

Eye contact, turn-taking, listening and attention skills are all crucial foundations to the establishment of expressive language. This colourful pack concentrates on fun activities that promote the development of these early pre-linguistic skills.

Communication between two people starts with looking at each other, listening and attending to the other person and waiting for your turn to respond. These foundations to verbal language are sometimes delayed in young children, so extra support can be given which in turn will help with language development.

Suitable for use with children aged 3-5 years who may have poor listening and attention skills, the pack can be used in small group or whole class settings by teachers and/or therapists.

Based on the work of Judith Carey, in collaboration with Helen Rippon, this pack provides a variety of games to play individually or in small groups to help with pre-linguistic skills:

  • Eye contact: Looking at the speaker’s face provides important information about language through facial expression (such as looking serious), gestures (such as nodding) etc. Prolonging eye contact is an important skill that needs to be developed before true communication can begin.
  • Turn-taking: this is very important in the development of communication. If people talk together and don’t wait their turn, there is a communication breakdown.
  • Listening: The ability to detect sound and attach meaning to it is the most important basic and fundamental building block for language development. Many children may have poor listening skills which affects their ability to understand and learn the spoken word – support in this area will have a huge impact on language development.
  • Attention: Working on attention aims to extend the time that a child can ‘attend to’ or concentrate on an activity. Poor attention skills affect a child’s ability to understand language and therefore will impinge on every aspect of learning.

Consolidation of pre-linguistic skills (ie eye contact, turn-taking, listening and attention skills) will aid understanding, a crucial component as children progress towards expressive language.

The skill areas of eye contact, turn-taking, listening and attention are split into individual sections in the pack. Activities can be chosen from the list to work on just one area of development, or alternatively, they can be ‘mixed and matched’ to work on all areas. Sample sessions which include activities from each of the areas can be found at the end of the pack

The later activities in this pack, such as the ‘Shopping Game’, work on the area of understanding. Story string activities help develop memory, listening and expressive language skills.

Where Letters and Sounds are used in group or class activities, the games in this pack are designed to work on specific areas of deficit. They can be used as one-to-one or group support.

A wide range of activities with clear instructions, colourful picture resources and sample sessions are included. The pack can be used in small groups or whole class settings by teachers and/or therapists.

Once early pre-linguistic skills are established the Black Sheep Press Narrative packs can be used to support expressive language. Packs are published for each respective stage, Nursery narrative, Reception narrative, KS1, KS2 and KS3/4. This pack is in effect a pre-cursor to the subsequent Narrative packs.
