The understanding and production of causal sentences are essential components in children’s ability to produce explanations and in the development of narrative skills. Our ‘Causal sentences – Why … because’ resource provides a useful intervention to target the understanding of ‘Why’ questions and the causal connective ‘Because’.
The full-colour pack of resources includes a bank of illustrated sequences, – targeting the understanding of ‘Why’ questions and the use of the causal connective ‘because’ to produce two-clause sentences and also the independent production of causal sentences with visual support.
It is most suitable for use with children aged 3- 7 years and full instructions are included.

Why… because provides a bank of colour-illustrated sequences, targeting the understanding of ‘Why’ questions and the use of the causal connective ‘because’ to create causal sentences. Full instructions for each of the activities are provided, including how to differentiate for younger or more distractible children. Sample scripts for discussion are also included.
Tell the child that you are going to play a guessing game and that you need to look at the pictures together to find out what is happening. The eye-catching and often amusing pictures help illustrate a range of 60 different why… because leading to causal sentences. These include:
Why is the girl happy? Because it’s her birthday. Why is the fish hiding? Because a shark is swimming by. Why is the woman picking apples? Because she’s making an apple pie. Why is the snowman melting? Because the sun is shining. Why does the man have a wet sock? Because he has a hole in his shoe. Why can’t the boy play football? Because he’s broken his ankle.
