The pack is full of activities aimed towards managing emotional responses and its resulting behaviour in the school setting.
Talking About School – developing situational understanding is a resource designed for children aged 5-7 years+ who may have difficulty managing their emotions in the school setting. The pack depicts a range of challenging social and educational scenarios which children in this age group may encounter when at school.
Successful management of these situations is dependent on the young person’s social skills, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal problem-solving capacity, as well as the response of others and the context of the event. This charmingly illustrated pack aims to provide children with strategies to manage these situations.
For more information see below.
It is inevitable that some children will require a more focused approach in order to learn how to manage their emotional responses and resulting behaviour, and many schools now offer small-group interventions in order to address this problem. The materials in the Talking About School – developing situational understanding pack are ideal for small-group work, and they can be easily adapted to one-to-one settings. The pack is also suitable for pupils who have pragmatic difficulties or an autistic spectrum disorder.
Talking About is a series that focuses on developing situational understanding and verbal reasoning skills in children. Each pack focuses on a specific aspect of the child’s life and how these skills may be put into practice in this setting. The idea originated from Educational Psychologist Marion Nash and has been developed by Helen Rippon, SLT.
The pack is full of charming illustrations by Helen Rippon. Children will discuss these illustrations, each of which shows a situation that is relevant to their experiences at school. For each large illustration, four additional pictures will then be shown to the group, depicting different responses to the scenario, some appropriate and some inappropriate.
Scenarios include:
The pack includes clear instructions for discussion as well as prompts for extension activities, making the materials suitable for use by speech and language therapists (SLTs), teachers and assistants.
