Syllables – syllable segmentation games

Description

A pack of games and activities to develop the early pre-literary skill of syllable segmentation. To help children identify the number of syllables in words containing one, two, three or four syllables.

The activities can also be used as a resource for developing a wide range of communication/social skills when used as a group activity e.g. listening, turn-taking and developing self- confidence through talking in context

The syllable segmentation pack is suitable for both group and one-to-one settings to facilitate repetition, modelling and reinforcement.

Devised by Felicity Durham with illustrations by Helen Rippon, a range of syllable segmentation activities are included along with instructions for use:

      • The posting game – an introduction to counting syllables
      • Lotto and pairs – including additional pictures for children who require more practice
      • Syllable ladders – who will be the first to get all their syllable balloons in the sky?
      • Syllable bingo – take turns to throw the special dice and cover up a picture on your board that has the correct number of syllables to match the number shown.
      • Syllable stars – throw the dice. Can you think of a word with the same number of syllables as the square where you land?
      • Syllable quiz – take turns to select a card and see if you can think of an answer! (eg think of something in the kitchen with three syllables in its name)

  • A lotto game with the lotto boards and pictures provided, where you take turns to choose a picture and count the number of syllables.
  • A pairs game, where you take turns picking a dot card and then choosing a matching picture (for example, two dots = lion!).
