Story Starters – constructing story sequences

Description

Based on the work of Bec Shanks and further developed in collaboration with Helen Rippon, Story Starters provides an extensive set of colourful illustrations linked to a structured Narrative framework which will help a child practice build structured story sequences

Based on Bec’s Narrative Therapy research, Story Starters develops the concepts of ‘Who?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘What happened?’, and ‘The End’ within a conventionalised form that includes:

  • scene setting
  • initiating the story sequence
  • providing a problem that requires resolution
  • solving the problem.

Many children exhibit difficulties with sequencing verbal information to form a cohesive narrative. When working on narrative foundations and structuring story sequences, in the classroom setting, the demands on the child increase dramatically because they are often expected not only to invent story sequences but also to write them down. This is particularly demanding for children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), or those with language delay/disorders who may have less well-developed imaginative skills. This can limit their success in story-writing activities.

How to use this Resource

Story Starters provides a strong visual and story framework, which lends itself to both oral and written storytelling.

Full instructions are provided for use of the pack which includes story framework cards and lots of colourful pictures to allow the development of a wide variety of narratives.

  • When
  • (Describing word – optional)
  • Who
  • Action word
  • Position word
  • Where
  • Problem
  •  — Said
  •  — Said
  • What happened?
  • The End

Developing coherent story sequences using the narrative approach allows the sequences to be built up step by step, using these story framework cards along with the picture selections. So, for example

  • One snowy day, a lonely bear was hiding in a dark cave. He saw a lion with a poorly foot. The lion said, ‘Will you help me? The bear said, ‘Yes, I will help you. The bear put a plaster on the lion’s foot. The bear and the lion became best friends.

Alternative ways of using the pack are also provided for use with more able children and to allow ‘group’ storytelling.
