The Speech Sound Inventory (SSI) is the new addition to our range of assessments and measuring tools.
Many children now begin school with delayed communication skills, and in areas of high deprivation, parents may struggle to access speech and language therapy support, even when early referral has been made. Thus, teachers are frequently dealing with children who are difficult to understand, and who are struggling to access phonics interventions.
Developed by Helen Rippon, Highly Specialist SLT, in conjunction with local schools, the SSI can be used by Speech and Language Therapists, but has also been designed as an accessible method for teachers to gather information on an individual child’s speech sound production.
The pack consists of amusing, colourful illustrations which target production of speech sounds at the beginning, middle and end of words.
Full instructions on how to administer the inventory are included, accompanied by easy to use record sheets, as well as lots of additional information on normal development, how to interpret what you hear, and what to do next .
Although referral for specialist assessment is always recommended, the SSI provides a method for teachers to understand and make a baseline assessment of a child’s speech development.
