Speaking and Listening through Narrative, ages 5-7

Description

One of our best-selling resources, this fun and colourful pack aim to develop children’s speaking and listening skills through narrative. It provides both Speech and Language Therapists and Teachers with an approach that is:

  • highly structured, including clear lesson plans and follow-on activities
  • designed to address many aspects of language and communication including attention, listening, receptive and expressive language skills
  • based on meaningful activities that are common to many classrooms
  • flexible and adaptable for different age groups
  • appropriate to use with individuals, small groups and whole classes
  • centred on developing oral skills and complementary to national literacy framework activities.

The varied, coloured resources teach the concepts of ‘Who’, ‘Where’, ‘When’, ‘What Happened Next’ and ‘The End’. Language and literacy development through Narrative using this framework can be applied to many typical classroom activities e.g. retelling events, story comprehension and planning as well as supporting explanations in verbal and written form.

Based on the work of Bec Shanks, the KS1 Narrative programme (Speaking and Listening through Narrative) mirrors the development of narrative skills in children  – from raising their awareness of the individual components of a simple story to retelling and then generating their own ideas for stories.

How to Use This Resource

The pack is divided into individual chapters focusing on each story component (‘Who’, ‘Where’, ‘When’, ‘What Happened Next’ and ‘The End’). Each individual chapter contains full instructions for use,  colour picture resources, activities, templates and a sample session plan with further carry-over activities. The sessions are primarily intended for use with groups of around six children and can be presented in 30 to 40-minute sessions once weekly for eight weeks. However, sessions and activities can be easily adapted.

This KS1 Narrative intervention and the resulting pack of resources were developed as part of a two-year pilot study involving six mainstream primary schools carried out in Stockport.  The results from the pilot study were striking. Not only did the children demonstrate increased scores on formal language screens but teachers reported significant changes in children’s ability to function within the classroom both in terms of listening and confidence. In January 2022, Wrexham Local Authority began a project to deliver Black Sheep Press ‘Narrative Therapy’ intervention into all primary and secondary schools in the county. The project is already reporting very positive outcomes.

The programme is suitable for use by therapists and teachers and for small group or whole class teaching, supporting the development of language and literacy skills through Narrative. This Narrative program focuses on speaking, listening, and comprehension in storytelling and facilitates the development of children’s narrative skills through structured sessions focused on different story components. This narrative program emphasises speaking, listening, and comprehension in storytelling, supporting children’s narrative development through structured sessions that explore the different story elements.

Separate Nursery, Reception, KS2 and KS3/4 packs are also available from Black Sheep Press.
