Social Responses: Basic level

Description

Every day, children and young people are expected to respond to a wide variety of social situations that occur in their daily lives. This entertaining pack of role-play scenarios helps to prepare them for these situations where they may struggle to respond with appropriate understanding, empathy or listening skills.

This practical resource uses charming, illustrated role-play activities to promote appropriate responses to common social enquires. Appropriate responses to such situations demonstrate a knowledge of ‘social code’ as well as listening and empathy skills. This pack works at a basic level. Intermediate and advanced level resources are also available.

Our social responses pack, based on role-play activities, contains twelve picture cards, illustrating common social interactions, which are designed to elicit responses and promote discussion.  These role plays are helpfully structured at first, but also give the opportunity to extend into children drawing on their own experiences to grow the activities further. The pack is structured into three distinct lesson plans, and is as easy to use as it is engaging for children and young people. The resource can be used with an individual child but will be most effective in a group setting, as this will generate discussion and facilitate role play.

The resource includes role-play activities which aim to promote the following social responses:

  • ‘Thank you’
  • ‘Sorry’
  • ‘That’s alright’ (as a response to ‘Thank you’ or ‘Sorry’)
  • Greetings, such as ‘Hello’
  • ‘I’m OK’/’Fine, thank you’ (as a response to ‘How are you?’)

Variations in the phraseology of the responses are to be expected and encouraged. This will enable the pupils to understand that there is not always a ‘set’ response to a social enquiry. For example ‘Thank you’ may elicit ‘That’s alright’, ‘You’re welcome’, ‘That’s OK’, ‘Anytime’ and so on.

After all of the lessons have been delivered, the picture cards in this pack could also be used as a means of assessment –  the children being asked what the appropriate response  to each picture card should be.

For more advanced social responses see our Social Responses Intermediate and Advanced resources.

The resource was devised by Angie Wooten and illustrated by Helen Rippon. Angie has been a practicing teacher of the deaf for over thirty years and is a passionate advocate of role play. She co-authored the handbook for teachers Using Drama to Teach Personal, Social and Emotional Skills (O’Hanlon and Wootten, 2007). Her MPhil was in oral communication skills.
