The development of children’s communication skills through play is at the core of all language teaching. While it is always recommended that children should have the opportunity to learn language through ‘hands on’ play, Sentence Builder provides an extensive bank of pictures which can be used to develop children’s understanding of language and their expressive skills through key words.
A colourful pack of activities and ideas, suitable for use with children from 3- 7 years. Full instructions are included.
For more information see below
Parents, Early Years Practitioners and Speech and Language Therapists have a wide range of opportunities to create language‑enriched play using real objects, action games, toys and symbolic play materials. While toy/object play should always be the prime focus, this pack of materials provides additional visual support for children who require a more staged approach to develop their understanding of language and their expressive skills. Such children would be those exhibiting a receptive and/or expressive language delay, children who have learning differences, and children who are learning English as an additional language.
Sentence Builder uses the keyword approach to language learning. Knowing how many keywords a child can understand and say is an extremely important piece of information for any adult working with that child. Adding choices to the activities provided for children is an integral element of the keyword approach. It allows the adult to accurately check the child’s level of understanding and also helps to prompt a verbal response.
Sentence Builder contains 8 large colourful background pictures: a garden; a farm; a garage; the seaside; a park; a street; a motorway; a zoo; rooms in a house. Also included are sets of associated pictures, grouped by category. These include food; vehicles; animals (domestic/farm/wild); furniture and people. Most sets of pictures are provided in two sizes – to add a ‘big/small’ choice when using the resources.
Clear instructions provide suggestions on using the pictures to develop comprehension and expressive language skills from one keyword level e.g. “Show me the car” up to six keyword level e.g. “Put the green fish and the blue spade on the sandcastle”.
