Secondary Talk Narrative, KS3-4

Description

This Secondary Talk Narrative resource pack was developed by Bec Shanks in collaboration with ICAN (now Speech and Language UK) and produced with the support of Helen Rippon and Black Sheep Press. When originally written, this pack formed part of the resources for ICAN Secondary Talk, but it can also be used independently of this programme.

The pack provides information about how oral narrative underpins written language and why using narrative frameworks can be helpful for KS3-4 pupils who require more support to become successful in written tasks.

Exploring written narratives in Secondary School education, the Secondary Talk Narrative pack  is designed to help school staff achieve the following outcomes:

  • To be aware of the need to provide a range of frameworks that scaffold written tasks across the secondary curriculum.
  • To be aware of the different types of narrative styles required across the secondary curriculum.
  • To have a range of narrative templates that can be further adapted according to individual needs.

How to use this resource: Designed to support the teaching of narrative skills in secondary aged children, the Secondary Talk Narrative resource pack contains:

  • An introduction explaining the importance of narrative development.
  • Information in grid form illustrating the different types of narrative styles required across the secondary curriculum and how to support these using the narrative templates.
  • A ‘pick and mix’ range of example templates that can be used as they stand and/or further adapted for use in other tasks/settings.
  • An expanded range of coloured Narrative Symbols specifically designed for an older age group.

All school-aged children and young people need to use narrative skills for a great many reasons. Structured approaches to narrative writing will be useful across the secondary school curriculum – for example:

  • to understand explanations by teachers and peers
  • to retell accounts relating to personal and classroom events
  • to give summaries of what they have listened to, watched or read
  • to explain how to carry out a particular process such as an experiment or ‘design and make’
  • to simply engage socially with their peer group by maintaining a conversation or joining in with the discussion of a recently watched film or TV programme.

Narrative means the way in which we ‘map our thoughts’ onto language, either verbally or on paper, in order to convey information relating to an event. This information may relate to events in the past, present or future. A pupil’s ability to recount an event, orally or in written form is dependent on having a ‘message’ to convey, the vocabulary and grammar to encode the message and a framework within which to organise and sequence that message. In a sense, narrative is the ‘glue’ that links the separate elements of language together and facilitates a pupil’s ability to use language for the purposes of reasoning and explanation.
