Supporting early narrative skills in preschool education, our popular Reception narrative skills pack is based on the work of Judith Carey and Bec Shanks and developed in collaboration with Helen Rippon.

How to use this Resource

The resource focuses on early narrative development, building storytelling skills for Ages 3- 5 years. Full instructions for use are provided along with suggestions for ways to incorporate the narrative framework into the curriculum and school routines. The programme outlined in this pack mirrors the development of narrative skills in children, from raising awareness of the individual components of a simple story to retelling a story and then generating their own ideas for stories.

The activities are merely a guide and not meant to be prescriptive. They can be modified, adapted, or changed to suit your class’s needs and preferences. The sessions work through ‘Who?’, followed by ‘Where?’, and then ‘When?’ and ‘What happened?’. They can be delivered in any order, but developmentally children learn the ‘Who?’ concept before ‘Where?’ and ‘When?’, so this should be considered.

What’s Inside

Throughout the Reception narrative skills pack, colourful picture resources are provided. With children in the foundation stage, it is recommended wherever possible to also use real objects. Most will be readily available in a nursery/school setting and are easier for young children to relate to than pictorial resources. The use of visual and material reinforcement (alongside spoken aspects of the programme) is integral to the activities. Story Component Cards (Who?, Where?, When?, ‘What happened?’) are provided for each part of the story. These are coloured according to the individual component they represent.

The activities within the Reception narrative skills pack include the use of ‘story strings’ and ‘song strings’. Many children have great difficulty listening to and retaining, information during story time, as well as sequencing and structuring their own attempts at storytelling.
Story strings provide a creative, concrete, and visually supportive framework to help children improve their performance in these areas.
In addition, story strings also:

  • develop turn-taking skills
  • increase vocabulary and descriptive language
  • improve listening skills
  • encourage imagination and creative thinking
  • allow for ownership of stories
  • increase accessibility to a range of abilities within the same group
  • support auditory memory skills.
