Pupil Language Profile (Screening measure 4-6yrs)

Description

Many children enter Foundation Stage with poor language skills and having worked closely with teaching staff in her local area, it became evident to the author that Foundation Stage teachers are often the first professionals to address the child’s problems. This Pupil Language Profile (PLP) screening measure was designed in collaboration with school staff.

Although it is always recommended that a child receives a specialist language therapy assessment, this PLP screening measure aims to provide a structured and easy-to-administer method of obtaining information on a child’s language development, which can be used to determine whether a child is in fact performing at expected levels of development, identify pupils who require more monitoring and track progress, or if an immediate referral to the Speech and Language Therapy Service is required.

The PLP is suitable for children in Foundation Stage and Year 1 (4–6 years). However, teaching staff may also find it useful for older pupils identified as having developmental delay.

The Pupil Language Profile is a screening measure which will enable teachers and therapists to obtain information on a child’s level of language function.  The PLP measures the child’s understanding of language from 1 to 4 keyword level and samples the child’s ability to construct short phrases and two and three-part sequences. This set of materials includes the Record Sheets (which contain instructions for administering the assessment), which can be reproduced as required and the Picture Assessment Booklet containing all the picture prompts.

The profile is generated by the assessment of four main areas:

  • receptive language
  • expressive language
  • short phrase/sentence level
  • two/three part sequences.

There are optional additional sections covering verbal reasoning (semantic skills), functional language and social communication skills.

This profile uses the key word level approach to language acquisition which was first described by Knowles and Masidlover to underpin their widely used Derbyshire Language Scheme. The concept of keyword levels (KWL) relates to the number of information-carrying words a child is able to understand in one question, instruction or comment, and to the number of information-carrying words a child uses in one utterance.

The attractively illustrated screening measure pack includes full clear instructions for use, along with background information, fully photocopiable score sheets and lots of information on how to interpret and score the child’s responses.

Age range: Suitable for children at Foundation Stage and Year 1 (4-6 years). However, teaching staff may also find it useful for older pupils identified as having developmental delay.

Format: 95-page PDF file including background and introduction (7 pages), colour Picture Assessment Booklet (25 pages), Record Sheets (13 pages), scoring examples (8 pages), and alternative black and white pictures (25 pages).
