Dr. Roslyn Nielson, Speech Pathologist, a respected Australian academic, has extensively researched the relationship between phonological awareness in young children and the development of literacy skills. This resource, written by Dr Nielson, will be particularly useful for class teachers to supplement the Letters and Sounds approach for children who require additional support to progress in their reading and spelling.

Phonological awareness includes the ability to:

Segment speech sounds at the level of syllable, onset, rime and phoneme.

Identify the sequence of speech sounds.

Manipulate speech sounds (blending, deleting, replacing).
