Nursery Narrative 5th edition

Description

Judith Carey has fully revised our popular Nursery Narrative pack (following changes made to the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage – 2024).  This fifth edition of our best-selling Nursery Narrative pack is now presented as Early Years “topic” based lesson plans, ideal for use with nursery-aged children, 3 years – 5 years. Four new chapters are included, along with a range of charming new illustrations by Helen Rippon.

The Narrative framework of ‘Who’ ‘Where’ ‘When’ and ‘What happened next’ is introduced through a variety of attractive and highly visual activities. Focussing on speech and language enrichment through story, the pack provides a complete set of topic-based lesson plans . This gives gives both speech and language therapists and teachers/teaching assistants a highly flexible means of developing nursery-aged children’s speaking and listening skills through narrative. Each topic incorporates practical (and active) activities, rhymes and songs which can be easily tailored to the session.

The pack includes full instructions, materials lists and lesson plans, along with extension activities and carry-over ideas –  ideal for either a whole class approach or for small group sessions.

Our popular Nursery Narrative is written by Judith Carey, a Highly Specialist SLT in Early Years. Judith has conducted training sessions on Narrative across the UK and is an enthusiastic advocate of the narrative approach. It remains a critical issue for Early Years Practitioners that many children are entering pre-school settings with reduced and impaired language skills. These children may have a small vocabulary, be just starting to join words together, find it hard to listen and attend to others when they are speaking, and may sound like a much younger child. For children with delayed language, research suggests that in early years settings, specific class or group-based intervention to support early language development through narrative is very effective.

What’s inside

The Narrative approach mirrors the development of narrative skills in children, from having an increased awareness of the individual components of a simple story to being able to retell a story and then generating their own ideas for stories. Sign is also used to reinforce the individual story components along with puppets, role-play and story books. Children learn to identify and use each narrative part, gradually building their skills from retelling stories to creating stories. The pack includes full instructions and lesson plans, along with extension activities.

Topics included within the pack:

  • Me and My Family
  • Growth and life cycle
  • People who help us
  • Superheroes/heroines
  • Pirates
  • Home and the world around us
  • Transport
  • Minibeasts
  • Animals
  • Dinosaurs
  • Night and Day Seasons/Special events
  • Traditional Tales and Nursery Rhymes
  • Daily Routines and Timelines
  • What happened next? The End  (Guidance is given regarding handling of ‘the end’ story component with younger children)
  • Extension Activities – Senses

Since the development of the original Nursery Narrative programme, an increasing number of schools and Early Years settings across the UK are embedding the Narrative approach into their daily routine. The pack includes specific guidance on incorporating narrative into the school day. The Narrative structure can be used more generally in the classroom, to support children’s comprehension of stories that they hear, in the planning of stories and when explaining and retelling events. It also provides the basis for developing questioning skills.

Research (details of which are also included within the pack) has been carried out in many areas by staff using the packs, and significant and measurable improvements are being reported in children’s attention and listening skills, play skills, confidence, and language scores as well as in staff’s awareness and focus on language within the curriculum.
