Negatives Not-verb-grammar is a pack of games and activities aimed at developing understanding and use of negative sentence forms.
Most children learn the rules of their language at an early age, simply by being exposed to the language they hear around them,- some children will require focused and targeted help to support their learning. When we want to say that something is not true, or is not the case, we use negative words or phrases.Negation can be indicated in a number of ways, but most commonly it is shown by using a negative word such as ‘no’ or ‘none’. One of the most common negative words is ‘not’. This pack has been designed to encourage correct use of negation in terms of the use of ‘not’ + verb (Negation: Not+Verb) ; for example, ‘The boy is not running,’ or ‘She is not sleeping.’
For more information see below.
This pack provides illustrations and activities that will enable the adult to model and demonstrate ‘not’ + verb (Negation: Not+Verb) phrases for children who have language delays. Examples include ‘not running’, ‘not waving’, and ‘not eating’. It also includes ideas and opportunities for the child to begin to use the ‘not’ + verb construction themselves in a fun and functional way.
Children who require additional support to develop their grammar system need to hear multiple repetitions of their target grammatical construction, accompanied by close modelling, correction, and positive praise of their own attempts to construct the negative.
The colourful illustrations and fun activities within this Negation: Not+Verb pack will facilitate this process. Full instructions are included. The activities include a set of barrier games; the ‘Funny Bunny’ game; role play suggestions with ‘not’; and lotto games. Meet Seleena and her new puppy Benjy who does not want to sit! He does not want to jump, or dance, or roll over either!
The resources are suitable for use with children with DLD, and would also be suitable for children who have English as an additional language (EAL).
