Narrative ability is one of the cornerstones of language competence in the school-age years and oral narrative is often felt to be highly predictive of success in reading/writing.
The Peter and the Cat Narrative Assessment is easy to administer, yielding a descriptive profile of the child’s development of narrative competency and can also help monitor progress. Suitable for use by speech and language therapists/pathologists and teachers, it enables assessment and profiling of the child, linking goals to individual, group or classroom targets.
Peter and the Cat can be used with children aged five to nine years. Although the tool’s primary use is with children who have language delays and disorders, the assessment can also be used for more general screening purposes in the mainstream setting.

When you purchase this assessment you also have free access to the Peter and the Cat Narrative Comprehension Assessment (NCA), which tests a child’s understanding of narrative at discourse level.
Peter and the Cat yields a descriptive profile of the child’s development of key narrative competencies (rather than being norm-referenced). Narrative sampling is one of the most time-effective and informative methods for assessing the communicative competence and emergence of literacy-related oral skills in the preschool or school-aged child and allows change over time to be measured. The packs include detailed examples of the analysis, case studies of both pre-and post-intervention narrative samples and links to suggested intervention materials.
The Peter and the Cat Narrative Assessment remains one of our most popular resources. It was first published in Australia by speech and language pathologists, Leanne Allan and Suze Leitão in collaboration with the teachers and principal of a Language Development Centre in Western Australia. The narrative assessment is recommended in: Carroll, Bowyer-Crane, Duff, Hulme, and Snowling, (2011), Developing Language & Literacy: effective intervention in the early years. Chichester: Wiley.
