Our best-selling Mr Goodguess resources are designed to promote the use of visual clues and develop inferencing skills. As we go through life, we make so many ‘automatic’ assessments of situations, using visual clues, that we forget we did not always know the ‘facts’ on which they are based! Some assumptions are based on convention (e.g. balloons on a gate suggesting a party), some on knowledge (e.g. the sequence of traffic lights), and some on repeated experience (e.g. weather events). Using this resource will provide many opportunities for discussion and teaching. The title Mr Goodguess conveys that we do not always know ‘for sure’, but some guesses are better than others! Children can be encouraged to guess too. If a choice reveals a misconception, it provides a springboard for talking things through. There is sometimes no clear right or wrong answer, but some guesses are more probable.

The Mr Goodguess resource was designed by Catherine Redmayne who practised as a Speech and Language Therapist with preschool and primary-age children for many years. She became very interested in the work of Marion Blank and the experimental version of the PLAI based on that work (Preschool Language Assessment Instrument by Blank, Rose &; Berlin). Using the PLAI highlighted the fact that many children with delayed or impaired language skills did not select relevant picture details that helped them to ‘know’ things. The idea for Mr Goodguess was born.

The activities relate to five specific areas: At Home, Out and About, Outings and Events, Emotions and Expressions and Useful Things.

For use in the classroom, small group sessions or therapy sessions. Each section includes additional homework or reinforcement exercises.  The homework activity sheets are self-contained, they have instructions and are therefore useful for TAs/parents/carers.

Aims: To promote the use of visual clues and develop inferencing skills. The backup exercises could support work in the areas of Speaking and Listening.
