Irregular Past Tense ought endings

Description

All languages contain a grammar system that enables the speakers of that language to structure and organise what they want and need to say. This pack contains a selection of attractive activities in a worksheet format to develop the use of the irregular past tense verb ‘ought’ endings and focuses on caught, bought, brought, taught and fought.

This pack is suitable for use with children from 4 to 7 years of age and is ideal for both one-to-one or small-group settings.

This resource is for use with children who have developed an understanding and use of regular past tense but who have not yet acquired the correct use of irregular forms of past tense. They are likely to exhibit immature forms of irregular past tense, such as ‘I buyed some sweets,’ or ‘I teached him how to play football’. Before using this resource, it is therefore important to ensure that the child understands that we change some words when we talk about things that have already happened.

The activities are designed for verbal production of the words, but teachers will find the resources helpful to assist the pupil to identify and use the irregular form and could adapt the worksheets to include a written target. When a worksheet requires some reading, the adult should always read it out aloud for the child.

The fun illustrated activities are designed to help the child remember how to change some words when we talk about things that have already happened. For example:

  • Spiders catch things in their webs. This morning, Spotty Spider caught all sorts of things. Colour and cut out the small pictures, then stick them on the web. Talk about what the spider caught.
  • Yesterday, four people brought different things to our house. Draw a line between each person and what you think they brought.
  • Mr Smith was my teacher last year. He taught me lots of things. Draw and write on the boards and say what he taught me
  • I read a good book last week, about a brave princess who had to rescue the people in the castle. She fought some scary things on the way. Follow the princess along the road. Join the dots to see who she fought.
  • Ryan plays lots of tricks on his sister. Last night, he dressed up. His sister thought he was somebody else. What did she think Ryan was?
  • Clear instructions and colourful illustrations make them suitable for clinic, home and/or school. Devised and illustrated by Helen Rippon, Highly Specialist SLT, the resource deals with one-to-one and group settings to facilitate repetition, modelling and reinforcement.
