Initial /s/ clusters Sound Games (Team Licence)

Description

Most children who are working on speech sounds require a high level of repetition and reinforcement to consolidate their target sound into connected speech. This resource aims to support children to do this through fun and engaging sound games.

This pack focuses on initial /s/ clusters sound and barrier games. It’s aim is to support children to ‘bridge the gap’ between using the new sound in formal, highly-structured directed therapy sessions, and move towards consistent use during conversation.

The packs can be used in one-to-one or group settings, and are suitable for children between the ages of 4 and 7 years. Each pack comes with clear instructions which makes it highly suitable for school and/or home programmes of work.

The initial /s/ clusters  sound games pack consists of:

  • Nine pages of game instructions, detailing fourteen separate /s/ clusters sound games.
  • A two-page set of colour pictures that have at least two examples of the target sound in the initial position. These can be used in a wide range of sound games.

Sheet 1 – pictures of a snake character to elicit slightly simpler target sentences. Pictures include: A snake wearing a spotty scarf/a snake in the sky/a snake smelling the flowers/a snake swimming/a big snake and a small snake/a snake on a slide/ two snakes staring at each other/a snake drinking a smoothie.

Sheet 2 – will elicit more complex sentences and have a higher number of words beginning with the target sound. Pictures include A snoring snail sleeping on a stool/a girl standing next to a small snowman/one skeleton on a scooter and another skeleton on a skateboard/a starfish on the beach with a spade and some stones … someone swimming/a boy (Scott) with spiky hair, spectacles and a smudge on his face. He has a sticker on his jumper/a stork and a swan standing in the water/a girl (Scarlett) skipping across the stream on the stepping stones/a boy who is scared of the spider and has spilled his drink.

  • Four barrier games. Barrier games provide immediate feedback to the ‘speaker’ on how clear their instruction has been to the ‘listener’. Because the sheets are visual and pre-prepared, this eliminates the need for the child to read.  Simple barriers can be made by standing folders on end and placing them between members of the group.
  • A dice and counter, colour action board game
  • A two-page colour categories game
  • Black and white duplicate pictures
