Identifying and Describing – Semantic Skills

This resource, full of fun activities and games focussing on semantic skills, has been devised by Felicity Durham, a specialist speech and language therapist, and developed by Helen Rippon at Black Sheep Press.

The pack contains a range of semantic skills activity suggestions, and clearly illustrated games, including some in ‘board game’ format, with counters and direction cards. For example:

• Lotto boards (find something big; find something noisy; find something you can tide; find something you can wash with)
• Describe a picture and collect the monster reward cards
• Hiders and finders – find the matching pictures hidden around the room

The resource is suitable for use in schools, with speech and language therapists and in the home. Suitable for use with small groups & one-to-one settings with children aged 3 years – 7 years.

The pack of resources aims to help develop skills in identifying and describing objects according to function and location, using adjectives (for example, “Find something you might see on a pond ”). The attractive activities in a game format also help to improve

• vocabulary development;
• use of adjectives;
• attention and listening;
• social skills;
• group discussion skills

Age Range: 3yrs. – 7yrs. Early Years: KS1 (can be adapted for differing skill levels).

Format: PDF file, 10 pages including 3 pages of activity suggestions, 5 pages of clearly illustrated activities & games.
