This pack aims to teach children the concept of ‘category’ and to improve word finding skills through a set of illustrated games and activities in which children sort common objects (for example, teddy bear, jumper and giraffe) into categories . It includes a range of fun games including pairs, board and lotto (bingo).
The pack will also help support vocabulary enrichment and to develop a wide range of communication/social skills including listening, turn-taking, and to help with developing self-confidence through talking in context.
The barrier games are particularly useful for developing listener awareness and giving appropriate information – both essential talking and listening skills.
Suitable for age range 3 – 7 years and for both small group and one-to-one settings.

This pack provides a set of fun games (including pairs, board games, barrier, lotto games and quiz cards) in which children sort common objects into a range of categories (toys, vehicles, animals, clothes and food). Instructions for each are included.
The games help to teach the concept of categories and also to improve word finding skills and to help support vocabulary enrichment. The activities will further support development of a wide range of communication/social skills including listening, turn-taking, and help with developing self-confidence through talking in context.
The barrier games are particularly useful for developing listener awareness and giving appropriate information – both essential talking and listening skills. Barrier games provide immediate feedback to the ‘speaker’ on how clear their instruction has been to the ‘listener’. Simple barriers can be made by standing folders on end and placing them between members of the group.
The aim of all the activities is to provide a bridge towards verbal work. It is important to take time to discuss the activity (e.g. ask everyone to name their favourite toy, vehicle or food). In a group you can ask the children to find out from each other and then report back. At the beginning or end of a session, go round the group and see how many names the children can think of within a category.
Based on the work of Felicity Durham, a specialist speech and language therapist, and developed by Helen Rippon, the pack is clearly illustrated with charming black and white pictures and is suitable for use in the school, clinic and home, as well as in small group & one-to-one settings for age range 3 – 7 years.
