The bilingual assessment materials in our FLAC series [Functional Language Across Countries] are designed for SLTs to use when they assess the early language skills of bilingual and non-English-speaking children.

The bundle contains the following ten individual resources (Click on the link to find out more about each resource).

  • FLAC1 Polish
  • FLAC2 Spanish
  • FLAC3 Slovak
  • FLAC4 Lithuanian
  • FLAC5 Russian
  • FLAC6 Mandarin
  • FLAC7 English
  • FLAC8 European Portuguese
  • FLAC9 Brazilian Portuguese
  • FLAC10 Romanian

There is a pack for each language, consisting of a manual, coloured picture book, and forms. There is also extensive background information on the research findings underpinning this approach.

The Bilingual Assessment materials cover vocabulary for various language functions and include naming, activity, description and location words, negation and possession; connectivity; and polar and interrogative question forms. Record forms for each section include receptive and expressive aspects of language and a parent questionnaire.

Stimuli presented to the child by a supporting interpreter are provided in the language under examination. Expected child responses are provided phonemically for user reference. In addition, word-for-word translation of stimuli to English provides information on language structure and content for the non-native speaker.

  • FLAC7 English has been prepared by speech-language therapists who speak English as a first language. Its purpose is to use as an informal tool to explore the early language knowledge of children who speak English as a first language and also the English-language knowledge of children who are in the process of acquiring English as an additional language.
    • It is anticipated that FLAC English will be of value to:
      • speech-language therapists whose first language is English
      • speech-language therapy practitioners whose first language is other than English
      • speech-language therapists who use the support of an interpreter to assess a client for whose language there is not a version of FLAC available. In this instance, FLAC English is a good, written, reference point from which interpreters will base their presentation of the stimulus items in the child’s first language
    • The authors and their colleagues currently use FLAC English with both bilingual children and monolingual children who are developing communicative competency in the English language.
    • The expressive language sections of FLAC English include phonemic transcription of expected responses as in other versions of FLAC. The transcription given is in Standard English. As with other languages, regional variations in the realisation of words will be evident and the practitioner should discuss the basis of differences with parents before concluding that any variation is an indication of impairment. The majority of variation will be noticed on the vowel.

Aim: To provide a pre-prepared set of materials for use by SLTs who assess the home-language function of children who speak a language other than, or in addition to English.

Age: Language level is a more appropriate guide than chronological age. The authors have found that both bilingual and monolingual ‘normal language’ preschoolers can complete most of the content of FLAC. Targeted use of the question sections and phonemic information will also yield valuable information for the school-aged child.

Format: Available by download. For either virtual or face-to-face delivery, these resources can also be used with the FLAC online picture book – see FLAC picture book.
