Written and illustrated by Helen Rippon, these activities were created to help children develop listening and attention skills while learning about basic concepts. Although initially developed as a listening activity, they have also been used very successfully to encourage children to speak clearly and fluently. Barrier games are an effective way of developing attention and listening skills and checking comprehension. (Positioning is arranged to ensure that no one can see anyone else’s board. This can be done by making ‘barriers’ by, for example, standing large books on end; placing a small screen or book rest between each person. Alternatively, children can be seated back to back, or on separate tables if appropriate).

The colourful, illustrated picture boards cover various concepts including objects, colours, shapes, numbers and prepositions.  Full instructions are provided, including varying the level of difficulty.

Example of an activity with varying levels of difficulty.

  • One-choice instructions: Put a button on the pig (identical button counters/object picture board)
  • Two choice instructions: Put a yellow balloon on number 3 (different coloured balloon counters/ number board)
  • Three choice instructions: Put a blue monster on the big car (different coloured monster counters/ size board)
  • Four choice instructions: Put a big yellow car on the blue square (car counters in a variety of colours and sizes/coloured shape board)
