Our popular Time for Sounds programme was designed to support the development of phonological skills in children who may have delayed attention and listening skills, speech sound errors and/or are not developing phonological awareness skills at the expected rate.

The programme of activities mirror the development of phonological awareness skills in children, developing these skills by explicitly raising awareness of the sound properties of words –  beginning with larger units of sound and moving to the smaller component sounds of words.

Aimed at nursery-aged children, it targets the development of general listening skills, along with the concepts required to understand and progress in phonics acquisition. Also ideal for older children who require a significantly differentiated curriculum.

This resource is aimed at younger children and targets the development of general listening skills, along with the concepts required to understand and progress in phonics acquisition. Also ideal for older children who require a significantly differentiated curriculum.

The programme of activities mirror the development of phonological awareness skills in children, developing these skills by explicitly raising awareness of the sound properties of words –  beginning with larger units of sound and moving to the smaller component sounds of words.

This fully illustrated phonics acquisition pack includes instructions for ten sessions, along with picture resources and extension activities to increase the level of difficulty as required. The 10 sessions as outlined are intended for use with groups of four to six children. The individual activities can also be used with one child or with the whole class.

Initial activities target good listening, good sitting, good looking, and taking turns.  Each of the games and activities within the pack is designed to highlight knowledge of a range of concepts important for phonics acquisition including:

  • same/different;
  • beginning/middle/end;
  • loud/quiet;

Examples of activities include:

  • odd one out,
  • hunt the animal,
  • which one makes this sound
  • sound identification
  • awareness of rhythm and rhyme
  • guess the sound
  • find the sound
  • syllable awareness games
  • syllable blending and segmentation
  • rhyming
  • phoneme/sound blending and segmentation

Aim: To develop sound awareness skills; to improve early literacy skills.
