Irregular Past Tense – ew endings focuses on: flew, blew, grew, drew, knew and threw. This resource is suitable for use with children who have developed an understanding and use of regular past tense but who have not yet acquired irregular forms of past tense. They are likely to exhibit immature forms of irregular past tense, for example ‘I buyed some sweets’ or ‘I teached him how to play football’.

The activities are designed for verbal production of the words, but teachers may find the resources helpful to assist the pupil to identify and use the irregular form and can adapt the worksheets to include a written target. When a worksheet requires some reading, the adult should always read it out aloud for the child.

The fun illustrated activities all involve Tick Tockwho talks about things that have already happened. For example,

  • It was Bilal’s birthday party on Saturday. It was a great party but there was a lot of mess to clear up! Look carefully in the bins and say what Mum threw away.
  • Think of things that fly. A bee flies. But last summer 10 bees flew in my room. Can you find them?
  • Winnie the Witch makes a wonderful growing spell. These magic spells need some help. Can you say what the spell did?
  • Get some paper and a pencil and I will show you an easy way to draw a pig. When we have finished, show your picture to someone and tell them how you drew it.
  • My friend Bick Bock is very clever… and he was a very clever baby. Look at the pictures … can you see what he knew how to do?

Clear instructions and colourful illustrations make them suitable for clinic, home and/or school. Devised and illustrated by Helen Rippon, a Highly Specialist SLT, the resource is ideal for one-to-one and group settings to facilitate repetition, modelling and reinforcement.

Please also refer to the Black Sheep Press website for a selection of additional worksheets which offer focused intervention for a wide range of grammatical markers.
