Independence Through Communication is a pack of activities, ideas and social skills sessions for young people with moderate and complex disabilities.

Its main focus is the full participation of non-speakers and non-readers who have memory limitations and need structure to learn.

The pack has five strands covering listening, expressing yourself, explaining your ideas, making choices and making friends. It is designed for groups of around 6 learners, who follow the programme at their own pace.

Independence Through Communication is a modular social skills resource with a difference. Its main focus is the full participation of non-speakers and non-readers who have memory limitations and need structure to learn.

The programme, delivered by a teacher or speech therapist, teaches the use of strategies to ‘scaffold’ responses.

Aim: Five strands of social skills cover listening, expressing yourself, explaining your ideas, making choices and making friends. It is designed for groups of around 6 learners, who follow the programme at their own pace.

Curriculum Targets: Entry Levels One to Three of the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum.
