Description

Creating Superhero Stories is a targeted intervention for pupils between the ages of 9 years and 14+ years, who are struggling to develop well structured oral and written narrative accounts.

The theme of superheroes continues to be a high interest topic and the strong visual approach provided will support pupils in their efforts to produce a coherent fictional story.

A strong message within the pack is that superheroes can come in lots of different guises. An example included within the pack is Communikate, a super intelligent woman who has developed the power to communicate with people, animals and plants. Using her Wonder Wheels wheelchair and her special abilities, she saves the planet by getting people to communicate with nature.

Creating Superhero Stories is a resource suitable for use by speech and language professionals, teachers and teaching assistants.

Pupils aged 9 years and above are increasingly required to record their narratives in written form. The greater emphasis on the use of written narrative to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and general ability within a subject has the potential to doubly disadvantage any young person who has difficulties with understanding and using narrative.

An effective method to support students’ written narrative is to provide writing frames or templates to scaffold both their fiction and non-fiction writing. These writing frames typically consist of outlines that provide key word prompts. However, by the time a young person reaches secondary education, such writing frames are rarely used, if at all, as pupils are expected to have reached a certain level of competence in maintaining a written narrative. This resource is aimed at supporting those pupils between the ages of 9 years and 14+ years, who are struggling to develop these well structured oral and written narrative accounts.

Content

A key feature of the success of Black Sheep Press narrative intervention programmes has been the use of a common set of narrative elements with associated visual prompts, and these are also included in this Creating Superhero Stories resource.

The pack includes eye-catching, colour illustrations for ‘who/characters’, ‘where/settings’, ‘problem’ and ‘action (gadgets)’ which are intended as a prompt to support pupils to generate ideas and aid discussion. The highly visual nature of the resource supports pupils to remember and organise key information.

Creating Superhero Stories features story templates for note making and organising ideas, and word banks with suggestions for appropriate vocabulary, linked to the narrative icons already learned (such as setting, character, emotion, dialogue etc).

Starter planners facilitate broader discussion of the narrative elements and will trigger ideas and plot lines for the forthcoming story.
