Teaching concepts to young children is a routine procedure for early years educators and speech and language therapists. Most children acquire concepts as part of their normal language development but some will require additional support to assist their understanding and use of concept words. This may be due to a variety of reasons, such as a language delay or disorder, general developmental delay or because the child has English as an additional language.
Concept words are always best taught in a ‘concrete’ real life situation, for example, colour, texture (soft/hard) and size (big/small). This newly revised and coloured Concepts – Big/Small pack provides a supplementary programme of work which can be used at home or during specific teaching sessions.
The charming illustrations and fun activities encourage use of the words in the correct context.
