Description: This pack provides activities to promote appropriate responses to common social enquiries. The pack contains twelve picture cards, illustrating common social interactions, which are designed to elicit responses and promote discussion.
This basic-level pack is based on role-play activities.
Aims: To promote the following social responses:
‘That’s alright’ (as a response to ‘Thank you’ or ‘Sorry’)
Greetings, such as ‘Hello’
‘I’m OK’/’Fine, thank you’ (as a response to ‘How are you?’)
This pack was devised by Angie Wootten, a practising teacher of the deaf for nearly 30 years.
Angie is a passionate advocate of role play and co-authored the handbook for teachers Using Drama to Teach Personal, Social and Emotional Skills (O’Hanlon and Wootten, 2007). Her MPhil was in oral communication skills.
Age Range: The activities are suitable for children aged 5–7 years (Key Stage 1) whose pragmatic skills are delayed.
Contents: PDF file on CD, 24 pages, including 10 pages of background and sample lesson plans and twelve picture scenarios, black and white line drawings.
